NAAA is a cysteine amidase that preferentially hydrolyzes the endogenous biolipids palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and oleoylethanolamide (OEA) . PEA is an endogenous agonist of the nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), a key regulator of inflammation and pain.
