It selectively blocks voltage-gated sodium ion channels on neuronal cell membranes, inhibiting the influx of sodium ions and thereby preventing the generation and transmission of nerve impulses, producing a local anesthetic effect. (R) - (+) -Bupivacaine hydrochloride can be used in acute pain research.
